Star Gazing

Rule-based artwork in crowd
A rule-based performance artwork that creates momentary configurations of scintillating "stars” through time and within a crowd or event.
The work merges three components:
1. A spatial and time-based performance taking advantage of
2. the ubiquitous image-making with smartphones in
3. an event in which people want to see and be seen.
The parameters:
1. The group meets before the event to establish a connection warm-up, so that group is connected and defined from "crowd".
2. The setting and coordinate position and choreography of each person is pre-determined.
3. The length of the piece and between each configuration is pre-determined.
4. At a designated interval, each person positions themselves as the first coordinate of the series.
5. In a 10 second window, each person simultaneously takes a series of flash photos of people and happenings around them at that moment, creating a twinkle of flashes in the crowd.
6. Pictures are not saved--they are only for the moment.
7. Repeat steps 4-6 until the choreography is complete.
Like a night sky, the crowd and group constantly moves over time.
Who are the stars?
They are the flashes of light that go off, the group, the people in front of the camera, the captured moment, the attention-getters.
